I've got a problem in the installation of Windows Vista. I've got Windows XP SP2 with a full set of all the recent security updates. I've used the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor and the report says that my PC doesn't need anything extra to upgrade to Windows Vista (except that it tells me to uninstall McAfee Security Center during the first part of the installation process).
On doing the upgrade to Windows Vista, it gets as far as "Completing Setup" and then it hangs - I've tried three times to install Windows Vista as an upgrade.
I don't have a sound card installed (I use the one built into my motherboard) - my system (I know, pitifully small and not very powerful but adequate for my needs) is:
ASRock K7VT4A Pro (Socket A) motherboard AMD Sempron 2400+ CPU 512MB PC2700 RAM 40GB HDD
I'm getting frustrated now - every time I reset my computer it tells me that the upgrade has not been successful and it rolls back to my XP2 installation. When this happens, a small file called "{E53E51C1-0538-4C20-AA0B-524BAA65CF29}" appears?
Any ideas/suggestions welcomed ;-)
Thanks, DNA

Installation problem
(If setup becomes non-responsive), do a cold boot, Start the computer, when the Windows Boot Manager is displayed, select Windows Setup press F8 on your keyboard and setup should continue. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

If you're still not having any luck, try looking for /$windows.~bt or /$windows.~ls folders on your drive. Open setupact.log and setuperr.log in notepad and have a look for errors.

after copying files windows restarts and then stalls on the boot screen what can i do
Hi,
Is there any drive activity, even if it's intermittent? If so, then it is probably progressing, allbeit slowly. Remember, this is a beta product and not everything functions correctly. I've had a few installs, particularly on 3-4 year old hardware, that took more than 3 hours to complete and often appeared stalled.

It would also be helpful, potentially, to know what hardware you are running on. As for trying to get the install running faster, most of the install hangs and slowdowns occur during the phase when Vista is trying to determine hardware and drivers. You might have better luck with the initial install if you pull any non-essential PCI cards out of the computer before doing the install. After the install is complete you can add the cards back in one by one to hopefully find the one that is causing you grief. Of course, I am assuming that you are working with a desktop system. You might try alt-tabbing when it seems hung to see if there are any error messages being hidden behind the install screeen as well.

When i tried to install Vista i received this error message.... The instruction at 0xfc5e67e4 referenced memory at 0x03bf7142. The memory could not be read. Other times i tried to install Vista it "freezes" up and gives a message saying an error in laying down the images. I have tried the 32 and 64 bit versions, upgrade and clean install with no success. Any help is appreciated.
I have a Motion 1400. I wanted to use Vista for its improved handwriting recognition. I am a writer and bought the Tablet mostly for this purpose. I installed Visa from the Microsoft DVD. I used the upgrade option. I am able to boot up on Vista.
But after the boot,I get a message that Windows Explorer has stopped working and that Windows is checking for a solution.
After a mintute or so, another message appears that states that Window Explorer has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. There is a box to close the program.
When I do this, the process starts over again. This is a loop that does not stop.
I am unable to have access to the Vista DVD. I cannot access system recovery options and try to go back to XP.
I also get a message that I need to enter the original Office 2003 disc. THis was installed at the University with the administrator's name but I have another Office disc with my name. THis does not come up when I close it. I do not see this as the main problem.
I backed up the computer some time ago and will not lose any files. However, this is quite disappointing.
I look forward to your help with this.
I am concerned that I will have to install XP from scratch.
I have a Motion 1400.
I used the Microsoft DVD to upgrade the OS with Windows Vista.
I am able to boot to Vista.
However, a message appears that tells me that Windows Explorer is not working and that Windows is looking for a solution.
A minute later, another box comes up that states that Windows could not fix the problem and was cancelling the search. THere is a cancellation box.
When I cancel this message, the process starts over again.
This is a continuous loop.
I am not able to do anything else on Vista.
This is not fully correct. There is a box saying asking for the original disc for Office 2003. This was installed by the University Administrator with his name. I am unable to have the computer use my disc with Office 2003. This does not come up when the boxes are cancelled.
I am unable to boot up the disc for a system restore.
I am quite concerned that I will have to start over again and put on XP. If so, I will need some guidance. I hope that I do not have to do this.
I backed up my files. However, this is quite a disappointment.
WOuld appreciate your help on this.
While installing it gets to "expanding files" (6%) then error message "An error occured while preparing windows setup to boot into the next stage of setup" DURING upgrade..I also tried booting from the DVD (clean intall) and get the same message
I checked $windows directory..install log no problems found (it only shows install for my dec 2005 install of Windows XP anyway)
This appears to be a bad DVD if so how do I get a repalcement from Microsoft...unless someone has a solution? (I HOPE)
